A comparison of Lithium-ion batteries to lead acid batteries in Electric vehicle application / stationary storage application according to the world-wide studies

  • Lithium batteries provide 100% of their rated capacity, regardless of the rate of discharge. Leadacid batteries typically provide less usable energy with higher rates of discharge. They are usually limited to 50% of the rated capacity to prevent diminished life.
  • Lithium-ion battery has better capacity, A battery’s capacity is a measure of how much energy can be stored (and eventually discharged) by the battery. While capacity numbers vary between battery models and manufacturers, lithium-ion battery technology has been well-proven to have a significantly higher energy density than lead acid batteries. This means that more energy can be stored in a lithium-ion battery using the same physical space. Because you can store more energy with lithium-ion technology, you can discharge more energy, thus power more appliances for longer periods of time.
  • Weight: Lithium-ion batteries are almost one-third the weight of lead acid batteries.
  • Cycle Life: Life cycle of Lithium ion battery is atleast 2-3 times as compare to lead acid batteries. Cycle life is greatly affected by higher levels of discharge in lead acid, versus only slightly affected in lithium-ion batteries.
  • Cost: Despite the higher upfront cost of lithium-ion batteries, the true cost of ownership is far less than lead acid when considering life span and performance.
  • Environmental Impact: Lithium-ion batteries are a much cleaner technology and are safer for the environment.
